Grant Highlights: Supporting Vulnerable Communities
NPT UK DAF donors recommend thousands of grants annually across a broad spectrum of causes. In this series of grant stories, we highlight three examples of how grants from our DAF donors are supporting people from the most vulnerable communities in the UK and beyond.
Tackling food insecurity
More than 21% of adults in London are facing food insecurity and 800,000 children are living in poverty. A $25,000 donation was made to a London-based charity which redistributes surplus food to more than 375 charities. These include organisations delivering children’s programmes, homeless shelters, food banks and refuges for women fleeing domestic violence. The donation will support the delivery of 100,000 nutritious surplus meals to some of the most vulnerable people in the capital.
Supporting internally displaced people and refugees
11.7 million people in the Middle East and North Africa are expected to be displaced within their own country in 2024. A donation of more than $72,000 was recommended by a donor to a US non-profit mobilizing resources for both immediate emergency relief and long-term health, education, and economic development programmes in the Middle East. The donation will support the organisation’s emergency response in Gaza.
Empowering young people at risk of homelessness
Around 119,000 people in the UK aged 16-24 were homeless or at risk of being homeless in 2022-23. A $12,000 donation was made to a UK charity which works with young people in the Southwest of England who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The charity helps individuals to build independence through housing, skills, confidence building, education, training, jobs and fun.
