Grant Highlights: Protecting Our Natural Environment

NPT UK donors are helping to protect the natural environment and promote environmental conservation. There is a growing body of evidence which indicates that people can benefit from contact with the natural world and participation in outdoor activities. From local efforts to national treasures to international campaigns, donors can support natural resource conservation and preservation easily and efficiently with their donor-advised funds.
Learning about biodiversity
A grant of £400,000 will help a major botanic garden expand its learning opportunities for children, adults and community groups with a focus on plant science and biodiversity. The gardens are using conservation science to preserve and protect plant species to ensure the future of food, medicine and clean air. This grant will help provide public programs to help understand the role of plants in our world.
Protecting habitat and species worldwide
A grant of over £140,000 is providing operating support to an organisation that works in nearly 50 countries to preserve species and protect natural habitats. It works in partnership with conservation organisations to meet the needs of species, landscapes, environments and communities. Their projects include protecting the endangered Cao-vit gibbon, rare conifers, and magnolias in Vietnam; researching and protecting a rare freshwater fish in Romania; and securing marine resources and sustaining fisheries in Kenya.
Restoring wetlands in a city park
Closer to home, a grant of £15,000 is helping to restore the wetlands in one of the largest open spaces in South London. The park has grassy spaces, woodlands and ponds, and is managed by a London borough. This grantee is a “friends” group, with over 700 members working with the community to improve the biodiversity of the park’s natural habitat through volunteer opportunities to plant and maintain trees, hedges, islands of scrub and wildflowers.
Supporting sustainable farming
A £10,000 grant is helping a small organisation in the UK to produce a campaign to tell the stories about UK’s regenerative farmers, urban growers and sustainable fishers who are using grassroots solutions to combat climate change and biodiversity collapse. The organisation works with partners around the world on regenerating health ecosystems.
